So It Seems We Finally Have a New Ambassador for Religious Liberty

So rumor has it that the White House and the State Department have identified a new Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom. It sure has taken them long enough to find someone to fill the post…

However, once again the Obama Administration has demonstrated that it doesn’t intend to carry out a legitimate human rights agenda.

I have reviewed the bio of the candidate, Reverend Doctor Suzan Johnson Cook, and I think she is a fine and committed human being with a tremendous background. Unfortunately, nothing in that background gives me one iota of confidence that she cares about, knows, or can fulfill the mission of the office of Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom.

Her focus on issues of violence, homelessness, and community empowerment are commendable, but show me where that translates into understanding the intricacies of religious liberty, which cut across dozens of competing national and international interests, from inter-faith dialogue to international security and counter-terrorism?

I have been nothing but disappointed in the supposed human rights agenda of the Obama Administration, despite the sweet-smelling words of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton at Georgetown in December. But words don’t mean a thing when the actions don’t support them.

I applaud Rev. Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook for her amazing domestic policy work. But I am not convinced she can carry out the responsibilities of the Ambassador at Large.

Then again, given the track record of her predecessors, she doesn’t have a high bar to jump over…
