Congratulations to Bishop-elect Joseph C. Bambera, the new Bishop of Scranton!

The Holy See announced this morning that Monsignor Joseph C. Bambera will be the 10th Bishop of the Diocese of Scranton. A news conference with His Eminence, Justin Cardinal Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia and Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Scranton, announced the news to the diocese.

Bishop-elect Bambera, born in Carbondale, is only the second native son to serve as Bishop of Scranton.

The Diocese of Scranton has been through some difficult times of late, and it was a wise choice of Pope Benedict XVI to name someone intimately familiar with the diocese. A new bishop from outside the diocese would have too steep a learning curve to administer to the needs of the diocese.

Bishop-elect Bambera will provide a healing touch to the diocese. A pastoral man of great warmth and approachability, he has already done a stellar job of raising morale among the clergy and people of the Diocese of Scranton.

I have had the great pleasure of knowing the bishop-elect for some time, and know that he will be a great shepherd and voice for the people of the Church of Scranton, but will also be an ear to hear their needs.
