Well It’s About Damn Time

Finally!

After 18 months in office, countless appeals to implement law, and repeated attempts to have his choice axed, President Obama today at last nominated Suzan Johnson Cook as the third Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom.

There has been serious opposition to her appointment, but I believe that while her background does not exhibit ready expertise for such a role, I have gotten to know Dr. Cook and find her to be capable, intelligent, humble and willing to learn. Her obvious lack of arrogance and entitlement will be a welcome change in the position and should allow for an open welcoming from the constituent communities she will have to work with.

I offer my most sincere congratulations and best wishes to Dr. Cook, and put myself and my offices at her disposal to help her fulfill the difficult role she has ahead of her.

Below is the formal statement that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton released tonight on Dr. Cook’s appointment. At 8:30 tonight. When the press stopped paying attention. (Just saying…)

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton made the following statement regarding the nomination of Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook as Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom:

I welcome the nomination of Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook to be Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom. Dr. Johnson Cook is an experienced religious leader with a passion for human rights and an impressive record of public service. President Obama could not have found a more fitting choice for this important position. I look forward to working with Dr. Johnson Cook, if she is confirmed, to bring greater focus to international efforts to ensure that people everywhere enjoy the global standards of religious freedom enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

She will serve as a principal advisor on religious freedom to me and to the President, and she will be supported by the Office of International Religious Freedom in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor. Dr. Johnson Cook is the Founder and President of Wisdom Worldwide Center and served as the Senior Pastor of the Bronx Christian Fellowship Baptist Church in New York City and is a Founder/Board Member of the Multi-Ethnic Center, an enrichment program for youth. She served as an advisor on President Clinton’s Domestic Policy Council and Chaplain to the New York Police Department. She has spoken throughout the United States, Africa and the Caribbean.
