Wait! What?! MTV Doesn’t Do Music?!?!
On August 1, 1981, “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles was the first video to air on the new Music Television cable tv network.
Twenty-nine years later, MTV executives killed the video network.
Earlier this week, MTV executives quietly changed the iconic logo, removing the words “Music Television”.
It’s actually been years since MTV had anything to do with music. Aside from the annual Video Music Awards, MTV has done away with all things music and instead become, as BlackBook magazine calls it, the “shoveler of reality trash.”
Then again, long gone have been the days since people waited for new video releases on MTV, waiting instead for the next dose of ridiculousness in reality tv.
We’ve been watching MTV die a slow and miserable death for years, so it is not shocking or disturbing to see the end finally come. Now at least we can take comfort in the fact that the soul of the MTV we knew and loved is at peace somewhere in the Ethernet of history.
And its body has been taken over by The Situation…
